No Maccas in the Hills Campaign demands the Shire of Yarra Ranges launches a Supreme Court Appeal.

Around 150 campaigners against the proposed Tecoma in McDonalds held a public meeting on the site of the proposed development on Friday 19th of October.  The meeting was held in the newly constructed community gardens and it  passed three resolutions:

  1. That the campaign will continue to non-violently resist attempts to shut down the garden
  2. That the campaign demands the Shire of Yarra Ranges launches a Supreme Court Appeal
  3. That the campaign will continue to fight the proposed McDonalds “as long as it takes”.

Campaigner Davey Heller stated

“This is no just longer just a battle over a restaurant but one that raises the question of the whole integrity of Local Government. Do local communities and residents through their elected representative have the right to influence planning decisions or not?

The No Maccas in the Hills campaign demands that the Shire of Yarra Ranges  fight for our rights through all available legal means by immediately launching an appeal to the Supreme Court. Stonnington Council recently launched a similar appeal of a VCAT decision on the point of law that VCAT did not take the level of community opposition into account and we believe this applies to the Tecoma McDonalds too.”.. .

The community garden itself also continues to be a hub of activity. On Sunday 21st October a meditation session, gardening working bee and non-violent resistance workshop were all planned. The campaign has also formed a number of working groups which include fundraising, legal, art, lobbying and the garden.
